To no one’s surprise, there doesn’t seem to be a single menorah in all of Kigali. Few people here have heard of Chanukah, let alone Judaism. So I decided to take matters – and materials – into my own hands. With the help of my trusty neighbor/handy man, a civil engineering student whose ingenuity never ceases to amaze me, I spent the past few days fashioning a menorah out of a wood block, nails, and beer bottle caps. It may sound a bit sacrilegious, but at least they’re the right colors…
Happy Chanukah!
Love it– and happy Hanukkah!
This reminds me of our stay in Italy, when we made a Menorah out of some wood. It lacked the elegance of bottle caps. The monk who knocked at our door was astonished to come upon a Jewish family. But he was reassured that all was well and put up one finger pointing to the heavens and said, “Uno Dio,” in a tone part question, part comforting answer.
Love it! The fact that you made a menorah I’m sure gets you points with the man (woman) above.
And blue and white bottle caps?? How serendipitous!
It’s a keeper.
We lit our candles and Max got Bakugan and was very happy. 7 more nights to go…..
Miss You
